Before start…
Collegerama will provide a specially made cable (splitter) in order to connect a laptop. As a standard rule*: we can only service laptops, since we can’t ‘take’ the image from fixed computers. The splitter provides us with the image of the presention, which we record and subsequently send back to the beamer.
*Note: In some lecture rooms however, Collegerama receives the computer signal (video & audio) directly in our recorder. If this is the case, the lecturer is free to use the fixed computer or his own laptop; whichever is preferred.
- The outputs that can be used on laptops:
- VGA (for the time being obligatory for MAC users as a result of the HDCP protocol used by Apple)
- HDMI (Windows)
- Our splitter will provide the beamer with the right input through HDMI. There are no other options.
- Making use of the FIXED computer is ONLY possible in what we call fixed rooms where a recorder as been built in.
Rooms with a fixed Collegerama recorder are:
- 3mE-CZ A t/m E
- BK-CZ A
- Aula-Auditorium
- CT-CZ A
- CT-CZ B
- EWI-lecture hall Chip
- LR-CZ A
- The lecturer will receive a wireless head-worn microfoon from Collegerama, in order for the lecturer to move freely during his/her lecture. The audio will be sent to our recording equipment.
- In case video’s, or other files containing audio, are used on the laptop, we will receive these in our recording equipment.
- All incoming audio will be sent back to the room for playback.
- The trained SA will place the camera in the (theater) middle or in the back of the (flat) room in order to get the best picture of the lecturer.
- The camera will be controlled via cable. We use so-called PTZ camera’s, which can Pan, Tilt and Zoom. The SA will start by making a medium-shot (head to waist). In case the lecturer walks a lot, the SA will zoom out in order to make a shot which viewer appreciate better (less panning).
- In case a chalk/whiteboard is used, the SA will ensure that all handwriting will be filmed appropiately. In some cases, the lecturer will already have walked away from his/her handwriting and the SA will keep the camera focussed on the board instead of the lecturer. The SA does this to ensure that the online viewer has the time to read what has been written.
- It has proven to be quite a hassle to keep both the handwriting as well as the lecturer properly recorded. Sometimes, the lighting near the board is of a completely different level than that near a lecturer. The SA will have to adjust the brightness of the camera during switches between board and lecturer. Our wish is there is as much light as possible on the chalk/whiteboard.
- Due to issues described above, we have a strong preference for writing on a digital medium, as for instance the smart boards which can be found in a lot of locations where Collegerama makes recordings.
- As stated above, we ask to keep all lights in the room on and non-dimmed; as known cameras work best with proper light.
All cables will be placed in such a way as to prevent accidents to people and to avoid problems for our recording. Our SA is trained to do so. In some cases, the time for properly setting up equipment (or lack thereof) is determinative for the possibilities. Sometimes, a previous lecture has taken more time which results in less time for our SA to set up for the recording. Please give our SA enough time to be as ready as possible for the recording – thank you.
- Teacher/lecturer:
- has presentation ready on:
- USB-Stick
- (own) laptop with VGA of HDMI output
- HDMI is set to output image & audio
- has presentation ready on:
- Collegerama (recording trolley with corresponding hardware)
- Camera
- Microphones (the ones from the trolley)
- Laptop (every trolley has one)
- Software:
- Office 2016
- Matlab
- Maple
- Mathtype
- Acrobat reader
- VLC player (for video playback)
- Accesibility to personal folder at TU Delft (via http://filr.tudelft.nl)
- Connecting and providing cables for splitter
- Controlling all incoming audio (for recording) and outgoing audio in lecture room
- Software:
FMVG together with ICT-AV (making sure all room hard- and software is functional)
- Functioning of beamer/smartboard
- Connections for laptop at lectern (in rooms where Collegerama has fixed equipment)
- Functioning of touch panel for management of room equipment (beamer, speakers, lights)
- Functioning of beamer, speakers & lights
During recording…
For lecturers, the lecture shouldn’t be much different with or without recording.
When a laptop is used, the image which is visible in the room will also be recorded as such. All input(s) (image camera & presentation file) will be recorded as separate video sources. The incoming audio will be synchronized on (both) video input(s) with help from scripts. After the recording has been uploaded to our servers, the viewer of the recording will see one or two video sources (camera and/or presentation file) with all audio used during recording. We try to prevent editing the recording as much as possible, given the large number of recordings made per week. In consultation, we can cut certain parts of a recording if necessary.
- The camera will be controlled by the SA sitting behind the recorder. The SA will record the lecturer in a medium-shot (head to waist) as much as possible. The SA will only zoom out when a lecturer walks a lot; the medium-shot would lead to a video which is unpleasant to watch. We try to capture as much expression and handgestures as possible.
- The chalk-/whiteboard has been spoken of in an earlier bullit but in short: analog handwriting can be recorded by camera. The SA will focus on the handwriting for as long as necessary – the online viewer has to be able to read all that has been written. In some cases, this means that the lecturer will already have walked out of the image but the camera still focusses on the handwriting. We would like to see lecturers use digital writing if possible.
- The SA will try his/her best to record a test-setup or scale model as good as possible. In case this happens, please consult with the SA how this can best be recorded. Since our camera is on a fixed tripod and can’t run around the room, it is best to prevent people from standing in front of the setup or model. The recording of a test-setup or scale model could also be made outside the lecture itself. This recording can then be used during a lecture (or be used as ‘loose’ video for other purposes). When used during a lecture which is being recorded by Collegerama, the separate recording will also end up in the Collegerama recording.
Please contact us if you would like to have said recording made; we can discuss the available options with you.
In a lot of courses nowadays, we see guest speakers provide lectures. Please make sure, if you have guest lecturers in your course, that they know upfront of our recording. He/she should give permission to be recorded. Furthermore, he/she should approve that his/her presentation will be made available for educational purposes within the TU Delft.
Sometimes we get requests for downloads of the recorded guest lecture.
After recording…
In case your lecture is part of a planned lecture series AND the room in which your lecture took place provides an active (fixed) network connection, the recording will be online within 5 minutes after the lecture has ended. In case there is no fixed internet connection available, the recording will be uploaded within two business days.
It may happen that your lecture takes longer than planned and a new lecture is planned to take place in the same lecture room. Please consider that our SA needs at least 10-15 minutes in order to upload the recording and collect all items belonging to the mobile trolley. The SA will try his/her best to have the room ready for the next lecturer, but will have to make some noise during tidying up.
- The SA will collect the splitter and Collegerama microphone from the lectern.
- The SA will collect the camera and tripod from the room.
- The SA will collect all cables belonging the mobile trolley.
All recordings can only be found (for now) on this website.
- In order to see the online recording(s), you will have to have an active TU Delft netID with which you can login on the overviewpage of your faculty/course. After logging in, you can see all recordings which have been made for the TU Delft.
- All our recordings stay online for as long as necessary. We can make recordings ‘offline’ when given a specific request to do so by the lecturer(s) who is/are responsible for the specified course. In this way we can still publish them if requested.
